Gray cement shingle siding and some older roofing can contain asbestos, and MDH lists asbestos siding and roof tiles among home products known to contain it. When a sample confirms it on your house, we take the siding off before re-siding, an addition or a teardown.

Houses and buildings of four units or fewer had an exemption for siding and roofing until July 1, 2021, and it is gone now. Cement siding on houses, garages and sheds in Bloomington, Mendota Heights and Shakopee is work we take on.

Siding and roofing work

Re-siding a house

Shingles come off whole wherever they can, without breaking or sawing. Plastic on the ground along the foundation catches chips, and the shingles are wrapped and labeled before they leave the site.

Garages, sheds and single walls

A smaller section, such as one wall for a new window or the siding on a detached garage, follows the same steps on a smaller scale.

Roofing

Asbestos can also turn up in older roofing. Before a tear-off we take samples, and we price the roof once we have seen it.

Leaving it alone

If roofing or siding is in good shape, MDH advises leaving it in place and carefully repairing any damaged pieces. Covering it over is sometimes possible, but check local codes before you do.

Planning outdoor work

Exterior jobs depend on access around the house, so we plan them with you.

Gardens and walkways

Plants along the foundation are covered or cut back, and walks are kept clear of debris.

People and pets

Keep children and pets indoors while siding comes off, and give neighbors notice when work is planned near a shared lot line.

Teardowns

Planning a teardown? The siding comes off with every other asbestos material, and all of it has to be gone two or more days before demolition day. Any left on a section being demolished turns that section’s entire debris pile into asbestos waste.
