Vinyl floor tile
We use hand tools on vinyl tile. A tile that releases cleanly comes up in one piece, and nobody on our crew sands, grinds or chips it, because those methods break tile into dust.

The black adhesive under old vinyl tile and sheet flooring may contain asbestos, and so may the flooring itself. Every layer is tested, the positive ones come up, and your new floor goes down on a clean subfloor.
The day the exemption for floor tile and sheeting ended, July 1, 2021, flooring in houses and buildings with four or fewer units came under Minnesota’s asbestos work rules. Tell us which rooms are on your list, in Bloomington, Mendota Heights or Shakopee, and we will plan the floor work around them.

We send the black glue to the lab separately. Tile and the mastic under it don’t always share a result.
In most cases, according to MPCA, the paper on the underside of old linoleum-style sheet flooring is friable. That backing is misted as each strip is cut and lifted, then bagged before it can dry out.
Before you pick a new floor, check what is under the old one. If the asbestos flooring is undamaged, MDH allows new flooring over it, so carpet or a floating floor can go straight on top and skip a removal step. Cracked, chipped or crumbling tile should not be buried that way, since damaged material can release fibers.
Floors sit under everything else in the room, so a little planning helps.
Toilets, vanities, washers and dryers may have to come out before we start. Let us know which ones, and whether your plumber is handling the disconnects.
Move boxes and furniture off a basement floor before we arrive. Sealing the stairway keeps the rest of the house clean while we work below.
Old leaks and soft boards are easy to see once the floor is bare, and we will flag any we find for your flooring installer.
