Duct wrap and seam tape
Some forced-air ducts are wrapped in white insulation end to end, and others only have tape at the joints and register boots. We sample each kind, because the wrap’s result says nothing about the tape.

Heat runs, boiler pipes and old furnaces can be wrapped in white insulation or sealed with tape that contains asbestos, and attics may hold loose vermiculite. MDH lists every one of these. We remove what the lab confirms so your heating or insulation contractor can get on with the job.
Our insulation crews handle these jobs in Bloomington, Mendota Heights and Shakopee. The state requires a licensed contractor when friable pipe covering in a home is more than 10 linear feet.

On hot-water and steam systems, we wet the pipe and boiler insulation, cut it off in short sections and bag it right where it comes off.
MDH points to the octopus furnace, an old round furnace with wide branching ducts, as a product known to contain asbestos. The furnace body and its ducts are sampled before a replacement.
If the fill between your attic joists looks like light brown, gray or gold pebbles, it may be vermiculite, and Zonolite was one common brand. Intact vermiculite can stay put, according to MDH. For removal, MDH strongly recommends a Minnesota-licensed contractor.
Insulation jobs touch the heating system, so timing matters.
Duct or boiler work may mean the heat goes off for a while. Agree on the shut-off time with your heating contractor and with us before setup.
Make sure we can reach the furnace, the pipe runs and the attic hatch. We carry the sealed bags out along the shortest path to the door.
The containment stays up until air samples are taken, and those results are part of the paperwork you get at the end.
